3296 Sgt. Arthur Franey 5th Pioneer Battalion
« on: October 19, 2009, 06:13:25 PM »

G'day,
I have noticed that Sgt Franey appears among the H.V. men honoured on this site. I am compiling info on the 5th Pnr Bn - with whom a Great Uncle served - Cpl. Gordon Carrington. He was KIA along with Sgt franey (Both 7th Platoon 'B' Company) and 5 others in the early hours of Monday July 29th.
I am seeking an image of Sgt. Franey.
Can anyone assist?
Happy to share information.
Hats off to you Dave for this site - incredible amount of work.
David.

Dave, during your research travels have you come across an image of Sgt. Franey - newspaper or other?
Assistance appreciated.
David.

Sgt Arthur Franey's name appears on the Singleton First World War memorial, apparently spelt "Francey".
His service record contains documents that state that he was an orphan and was adopted by Mr Frederick Burgman of Sedgefield via Singleton.
At time of enlistment Arrhur was a porter living in Sydney.
His medals and death plaque were sent to Mrs Lillian Sophia Lambert, daughter of Frederick Burgman, after Frederick's death in 1917.
Unfortunately I am not able to provide an image of Sgt Franey.

Thanks for your reply Dave.
Putting together an account of the 5th Pioneer Battalions part in the Morlancourt operation. Have images of 5 of the 7 men KIA.
Will keep searching papers. Thanks again for your time.
David.
