The Hunter Boer War Lists
« on: December 12, 2008, 03:08:55 PM »

Dear All

I have been trying for some time to locate my grandfathers record of involvement in the Boer War.

All I have found is a record showing medals issued and they are to a Arthur Bode. not Boole

My grandfather was Arthur Boole born 1859 and moved to Australia in 1892 from England

It is possible that the o & the l have been made into a "d"

There is though a record of birth for  Arthur V. L. Bode born Newcastle in 1871 who may have actually served and be this person

I have photograph of my grandfather in uniform I believe to be around 1900. appears Boer War dress uniform?

I have not found any one who can confirm this uniform.

My aunt also mentioned that Arthur Boole did serve in the Australian Military.

As records of the Boer War are hard to find, I was hoping that someone may have access to the Hunter Boer War listings and be able to see if there actually was a Arthur Bode in your records. That is asuming he there. He would have been 29 in 1900.  My grandfather would have been 41 in 1900.

Thank you for any assistance  -_-

Kevin
I do not undertake research for individuals.
Arthur Bode's name is on the list as either being born in Newcastle or next of kin's address as being Newcastle.
He was in the 1st New South Wales Mounted Rifles.
The followng link is to an internet based Boer War database.

This is all I am able to do for you.

Kevin,
There are no "Hunter Boer War listings", as such, of men who volunteered and served in the South African Boer War of 1899-1902.
The only complete listing of men from the Hunter Valley (including Lake Macquarie, Newcastle and surrounding towns/suburbs, Maitland district, Cessnock and coalfields, Singleton, Muswellbrook, Scone and Upper Hunter) was researched and compiled by myself in 1999 after reading through dozens of microfilm rolls containing South African Boer War enlistment details.
There is approximately 650 names.
This research and compilation of names was my incentive to commemorate the centenary of the South African Boer War.
These names and enlistment details were sent to each of the local government councils and RSL Sub- Branches throughout the Hunter Valley with the suggestion that commemorative plaques be installed in each of the local government areas to commemorate the men from their district who volunteered and served in South Africa.
The response was very disappointing.
Take a drive around the Hunter Valley today and you will find only a few memorials to the Hunter's Boer War veterans.

Dear Digger Dave

Firstly, my apologies for not acknowledgeing your reply as yet.

Thank you for your reply.

I followed up your reply, by researching the SMH papers of the time checking for departure lists and return lists.

What I was able to confirm only recently was that there was a return of a soldier A V L Bode in 1900 to Australia. (SMH)

This has now led me to the belief that this was not a mis spelling.

I do hold a photograph of my granfather  in dress uniform together with his wife. The uniform is quoted on other web pages as a uniform  of the NSW Mounted Rifles.

My quest will continue over time and as I read more of the pages in the Murray Officail Book.

Your second email

You certainly have done a lot of work in the tedious task of reading microfilm and it is most dissapointing, the repsonse especially from the RSL's

There is a lack of recognition to those who served in the Boer War.

Hopefully the concerns by yourself, The creation of a national monument as proposed will all lead to some recognition.

May be a time to resubmit your request for local recognition again.

We are lucky in our local community of Bathurst NSW to have a fine monument for the Boer War and another for the 1914-18 war to recognise the efforts of the past.

Thank you again for your reply    -_-

Kevin.
Thank you for your kind words of encouragement.
The Bathurst South African Boer War memorial has had its share
"ups and downs" in the past, with one story being circulated that
Lord Kitchener would not unveil (?) the memorial until the name of
Peter Handcock (executed with Breaker Morant) was removed.
Lieut Peter Handcock's name was later added - and rightfully so.
Please keep us posted of your research and findings.
May good fortune continue to shine upon you.
Go kindly,
diggerdave
