Descendants of the diggers who took part in the charge at Beersheba commemorated the 90th anniversary of the battle yesterday by donating medals to the Australian War Memorial so future generations can understand the significance of the victory.
At 4.30pm on October 31, 1917, 800 Australian light horse troopers caught Turkish artillery by surprise and successfully charged the town of Beersheba, in what is now southern Israel.
Commemoration ceremonies were held around Australia yesterday and a re-enactment was held in Israel to remember those who died during the charge.] Unquote
